Professional Services Project

Projects can be classified in different ways, and one common distinction is a Professional Services Project. These projects do not have traditional, physical products as their primary deliverable. Rather, the deliverable is intellectual in nature such as a scientific article, process documentation, or software. The PMBOK® (4th Ed.) defines a project as “a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result” (page 5). This edition of the PMBOK added “result” to the previous edition’s definition. A “result” especially is an intellectual output of a Professional Services Project such as “a research project that develops knowledge” (page 5).  Some employers specifically advertise for a Professional Services Project Manager in recognition that there is some specialized knowledge that is useful in these types of projects.
